‘Dencun’ Upgrade Officially Deployed On Ethereum Mainnet, ETH Price Holds Steady Below $4,000

Ethereum (ETH) has completed a major software upgrade, Dencun, that promises to make utilizing the network ecosystem more cost-effective. This update specifically targets Layer 2 (L2) networks, such as Arbitrum (ARB), Polygon (MATIC), and Coinbase’s Base, which are interconnected with Ethereum.

With Dencun, transaction costs on these networks have significantly decreased, with fees dropping from dollars to cents or even fractions of a cent.

Ethereum Dencun Upgrade And Cost Savings

Considered the most significant change in Ethereum’s end-user experience, the Dencun upgrade is expected to foster the development of new applications and services by significantly reducing expenses.

As NewsBTC reported on Tuesday, the update introduces a new data storage system, departing from the traditional approach of storing Layer 2 data on Ethereum itself. Adopting a new “blobs” repository reduces data storage costs since information is warehoused for only about 18 days instead of indefinitely.

One of the notable benefits of the Dencun upgrade lies in its impact on decentralized exchanges (DEXs) and gas costs. For instance, projected gas costs for popular Layer 2 networks, such as Arbitrum, Optimism, and Coinbase’s Base, are set to be significantly reduced.

Ethereum

The projected savings translate into a reduction of Arbitrum’s swaps from $2.02 to $0.40, Optimism’s swaps from $1.42 to $0.28, and Coinbase’s Base swaps from $0.58 to $0.01, emphasizing the pivotal role of this upgrade.

As the upgrade was successfully launched on the mainnet, Tim Beiko, Ethereum Foundation core developer, expressed his satisfaction with the work accomplished and claimed:

Dencun is both the most complex fork we’ve shipped since the Merge, and tied for “most total EIPs in a fork” with Byzantium. There were more teams than ever involved in the process, and it somehow all worked out smoothly…! Grateful to work with all of them, onto the next one.

Blob Transactions And Pricing Changes

Layer 2 network Arbitrum has provided insights into the upgrade process. It will take around one to two hours for blob transactions to commence posting and for the new pricing changes specified by EIP-4844 to come into effect.

ArbOS Atlas, an upgrade that supports Arbitrum Chains, will introduce further fee reductions for Arbitrum One, set to be activated on March 18th. The updated configurations include a reduction in the Layer 1 (L1) surplus fee from 32 gwei to 0 per compressed byte and a reduction in the L2 base fee from 0.1 gwei to 0.01 gwei.

The Dencun upgrade unlocks cost-saving opportunities for Layer 2 networks and addresses congestion concerns by freeing up more space on the Ethereum network for additional transactions. While the upgrade offers enhanced efficiency, it does come at the cost of no longer retaining a complete record of all data indefinitely.

However, as Layer 2 networks embrace this new update to the Ethereum ecosystem, the stage is set for accelerated adoption, usage, and broader accessibility within the Ethereum community and its underlying protocols.

Dencun Upgrade Fails To Propel ETH Above $4,000

Despite the successful upgrade, ETH’s price remains unaffected, continuing to consolidate below the $4,000 threshold. The token attempted to surpass this crucial resistance level on Monday and Tuesday but failed to sustain its position above it.

Ethereum

For over 24 hours now, ETH has been trading between $3,930 and $3,970. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that ETH has maintained its upward momentum, with gains exceeding 18% over the past fourteen days and nearly 60% over the past thirty days.

Additionally, introducing the Dencun upgrade is expected to drive increased demand for ETH, potentially sparking a renewed uptrend that could bridge the gap between current trading prices and its previous all-time high (ATH) of $4,878, achieved in November 2021.

Avalanche Unleashes Durango Upgrade, AVAX Price Rockets 8% With ‘Teleporter’ Debut

Blockchain platform Avalanche (AVAX) has announced the launch of the Durango upgrade and introduced Teleporter, a tool designed to improve communication within the protocol’s ecosystem.

Simplified Cross-Chain Messaging?

Teleporter, built on Avalanche Warp Messaging (AWM), the platform’s native messaging protocol, serves as a “developer-friendly interface” that reportedly simplifies the process of sending and receiving cross-chain Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) messages.

According to the announcement, by leveraging Teleporter, Avalanche blockchains will be able to share various types of information, including tokens, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and oracle price feed data.

This “coordinated” communication will reportedly promote fluid EVM interoperability, enabling developers to create cross-subnet applications that provide “full functionality” and a “seamless user experience.” The Avalanche announcement goes on to say:

Since the beginning, Avalanche was developed to be a sprawling network of lightning-fast custom app chains. Subnets launched in Spring 2022, sparking an initial cohort of custom app chains that has grown to dozens, with many more coming across all major blockchain verticals. Since then, breakthroughs and highly anticipated releases like AWM (Subnet interoperability), HyperSDK (VM optimization), and Firewood (throughput) have vastly improved the potential capabilities of Subnets, and now Teleporter allows EVM Subnets to pass messages unhindered, natively linking the growing universe of Subnets.

The protocol also highlights that developers can now build cross-chain swaps and create gaming environments where one subnet can unlock features in another. Institutions will reportedly be able to use Circle’s USDC as a subnet’s native gas token, which Avalanche sees as an avenue for “financial innovation.”

Avalanche Durango Upgrade

The introduction of Teleporter coincided with the successful activation of the Durango upgrade on Avalanche’s Mainnet on March 6. Durango implemented several community-proposed Avalanche Community Proposals (ACPs), including ACP-30, which activated AWM, forming the foundation for Teleporter’s functionality.

Patrick O’Grady, VP of Platform Engineering at Ava Labs, expressed excitement about the Durango Upgrade, stating that Subnets can now natively communicate with the C-Chain using AWM.

O’Grady further emphasized that Teleporter provides an EVM-compatible interface, enabling Solidity developers to trigger contract invocations across any Avalanche Subnet.

On the other hand, Emin Gün Sirer, founder and CEO of Ava Labs, highlighted the role of Avalanche Warp Messaging and Teleporter in “revolutionizing” communication within Avalanche blockchains. Sirer emphasized that these “lightweight primitives” enhance user and developer experiences while solidifying Avalanche’s position as an “interoperability leader.”

Ultimately, with the release of Teleporter, Avalanche states that it is taking a step toward realizing its vision of a connected network of chains, providing increased interoperability and enabling developers to easily build cross-chain applications.

Avalanche

The native token of the Avalanche network, AVAX, has experienced a significant surge of 8% in the past 24 hours, reaching a trading price of $44.18. This increase follows its consistent upward trend, with a remarkable year-to-date growth of over 173%.

Uniswap Expands Reach: Deploys v2 Protocol On Six New Chains Including Arbitrum And Polygon

Uniswap (UNI), one of the largest decentralized cryptocurrency exchanges (DEX) by trading volume, has made an important announcement regarding deploying its v2 protocol on six additional chains.

The chains on which the v2 protocol has been deployed include Arbitrum (ARB), Polygon (MATIC), Optimism (OP), Base, Binance Smart Chain (BSC), and Avalanche (AVAX).

Uniswap Widens v2 Protocol Deployment

According to a recent post on X (formerly Twitter) by Uniswap Labs, the software product developer working on the protocol, the decision to deploy the v2 protocol on more chains is primarily driven by the desire to simplify the experience for Liquidity Providers (LPs).

While the protocol’s v3 offers advanced features tailored for active liquidity providers, the development team believes the v2 protocol offers a more “straightforward approach.”

By default, v2 pools cover the entire price range, reducing the need for upfront decisions and minimizing the active involvement of liquidity providers. This simplification streamlines the process and makes it more accessible to a broader range of users, according to the announcement.

Another benefit of using the v2 protocol on multiple chains, according to Uniswap Labs, is its cost efficiency. Creating pools on v2 is more gas efficient than other versions, resulting in lower gas costs to add liquidity.

This cost reduction can be translated into savings for users, making swaps on the platform “incredibly affordable.” In addition, the use of v2 on Layer 2 scaling solutions significantly reduces the risk of frontrunning and manipulative practices known as Miner Extractable Value (MEV).

Ultimately, by offering an official v2 deployment directly accessible through the Uniswap interface, the developers suggest that users can be assured of a safe and secure environment for their swaps.

UNI Price Dip, Platform Metrics Remain Solid

Despite the recent developments that could attract investors’ attention and drive broader adoption of the Uniswap protocol, the exchange’s native token, UNI, is currently undergoing a significant correction in line with the overall market trend.

Currently, UNI is trading at $7.22, representing a 4.4% price drop in the past 24 hours and a 1.1% decline in the last trading hour. However, it’s worth noting that UNI has been one of the better-performing tokens in the market, with price increases of 14.7% and 16.8% in the past fourteen and thirty days, respectively.

Uniswap

Furthermore, according to data from Token Terminal, the Uniswap ecosystem continues to exhibit substantial growth in key metrics.

The fully diluted market capitalization of Uniswap stands at $7.56 billion, reflecting the total value of all tokens if they were fully in circulation. This figure has experienced a notable increase of 18.4% over the past month.

In contrast, the circulating market capitalization, which considers the currently circulating tokens, is valued at $6.94 billion, indicating a 19.9% increase over the same period.

Uniswap

Despite the overall surge in market capitalization, the trading volume of the UNI token has experienced a significant decline of 69.3% over the past 30 days, amounting to $2.79 billion.

The total value locked (TVL), a measure of the value of assets locked within Uniswap’s smart contracts, has also experienced a 14.4% increase, reaching $4.76 billion.

UN Accuses North Korea Of $3B Crypto Theft To Fund Nuclear Weapons Program

In a recently reviewed unpublished report by Reuters, United Nations (UN) sanctions monitors have alleged that North Korea engaged in a massive theft of crypto assets, raking in $3 billion through cyberattacks.

Nuclear Upgrades And Crypto Cyberattacks Unveiled

According to Reuters, the independent panel of sanctions monitors revealed that despite international sanctions, North Korea continued to defy regulations by enhancing its nuclear arsenal and producing nuclear fissile materials.

The monitors further noted that the country conducted ballistic missile launches, deployed a “tactical nuclear attack submarine,” and even placed a satellite into orbit.

The UN report points to 58 suspected cyberattacks on crypto-related companies between 2017 and 2023, valued at approximately $3 billion. These attacks allegedly provided crucial funding for North Korea’s weapons of mass destruction (WMD) development.

The report states that hacking groups affiliated with the Reconnaissance General Bureau, North Korea’s primary foreign intelligence agency, were responsible for these cyber assaults.

The monitors highlighted the increasing trend of North Korea targeting defense companies and supply chains and collaborating with other actors by sharing infrastructure and tools. The report also raises concerns about reports of North Korea supplying conventional arms and munitions, which contravenes existing sanctions.

While the UN report is set to be released publicly later this month or early next, North Korea’s mission to the United Nations has not yet responded to requests for comment on the sanctions monitors’ allegations.

The Security Council, traditionally deadlocked on the issue, is unlikely to take immediate action against North Korea, according to Reuters.

China and Russia have advocated for easing the sanctions to “persuade” North Korea to return to denuclearization talks. Furthermore, Russia and North Korea have recently pledged to strengthen military relations, although both countries deny allegations of weapons supply.

North Korea’s Illicit Trade

Per the report, North Korea has slowly begun to emerge despite the lockdown imposed amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The UN report reveals signs of trade recovery, with a higher trade volume in 2023 compared to 2022.

Notably, the United Nations monitors noted the reappearance of foreign consumer goods, including potential luxury items prohibited under Security Council sanctions.

The sanctions monitors also investigated reports of numerous North Korean nationals working overseas violating sanctions, particularly in information technology, restaurants, and construction sectors. These individuals were found to earn income that benefited the North Korean government.

In addition, the report highlights North Korea’s continued access to the international financial system and engagement in illicit financial activities, including crypto assets, in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions.

Bittensor (TAO) Surges 100%, Eyeing $3 Billion Market Cap: Analyzing The Propelling Factors

Among the digital currencies focused on artificial intelligence (AI), Bittensor (TAO) has recently gained significant attention as the best-performing asset, soaring by an impressive 109% over the past 30 days and achieving a market capitalization of $2.9 billion.

To comprehend the driving forces behind this growth, it is essential to understand what underpins the platform and the catalysts that have captured investors’ attention, enabling it to reach an almost $3 billion market cap in record time.

Bittensor ‘Game-Changing’ Upgrade?

According to Sami Kassab, a researcher at Messari, Bittensor has transitioned from being a niche crypto-AI project to gaining widespread recognition within the open-source AI community.

Notably, a significant network upgrade proposal called Dynamic TAO has been pivotal in this surge. Bittensor operates as an ecosystem of specialized networks, known as subnets, each dedicated to a specific machine learning use case or resource provision.

These subnets offer diverse services, including conversational AI platforms similar to ChatGPT, prediction tools for financial markets, pre-trained and fine-tuned models, synthetic data, and data storage solutions

The Root Network, specifically subnet 0, functions as Bittensor’s governing body, where Root validators vote on the allocation of emissions to the various subnets. However, two key issues have been identified with the current system:

  • Concentration of Influence Over Emissions: The top five Root validators control over 60% of the token supply.
  • Scalability Issues: The manual process of setting emissions for each subnet becomes increasingly impractical as the number of subnets grows.

The foundation has proposed a network upgrade known as Dynamic TAO to address these issues. This upgrade aims to replace the Root Network with an automated, market-driven mechanism for emission distribution, shifting away from a subjective, manual process dominated by a few validators.

Furthermore, according to the researcher, under Dynamic TAO, each subnet would have its unique token and native liquidity pool paired with TAO.

Emissions would be allocated based on the relative market price of these subnet tokens. Subnets that generate the most value would see their subnet tokens in high demand from validators, signaling the protocol to allocate more emissions to them.

Bullish Demand For TAO

To prevent potential dilution of TAO, subnet tokens are designed to be non-transferable outside the Bittensor system.

The conversion between subnet tokens and TAO would occur through the protocol’s intrinsic liquidity pools (LP), treated as a staking activity. According to Kassab, acquiring subnet tokens would thus require purchasing and staking TAO within a subnet pool for validation or speculation.

This design is expected to create bullish demand for TAO, as the need for subnet tokens would drive an increased demand for TAO.

For instance, the research shows that if subnets achieve a collective valuation of $1 billion, assuming a 10% weekly trading volume relative to their market cap, the demand for TAO could witness a 2 – 4x surge, driven by the requirement to purchase TAO before acquiring subnet tokens.

Ultimately, Kassab believes that the Dynamic TAO proposal sets the stage for an “AI Casino” within Bittensor, a development with positive implications for the platform and the token’s price growth.

Overall, Bittensor’s solutions and proposals demonstrate an intriguing approach to drive growth within its ecosystem. These initiatives aim to attract investors, stakers, and developers focusing on artificial intelligence, all while leveraging the potential of its native token, TAO.

Bittensor

At the time of writing, the TAO token is trading at $481, reflecting an increase of over 12% within 24 hours. Furthermore, TAO has demonstrated a sustained upward trend over significant time frames, with an 8% growth in the past 7 days and an 85% growth over the past 14 days.

Moving forward, it remains to be seen how the protocol will continue to attract new investors and developers, potentially driving TAO’s price beyond its current all-time high of $521, achieved on February 6.

NEAR Protocol’s Expansion: Q4 2023 Shows 1,250% Rise In Daily Active Addresses

NEAR Protocol, the Blockchain Operating System (BOS), experienced significant growth in key metrics during the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2023. The protocol’s native token, NEAR, recorded a remarkable 16% year-to-date growth and witnessed a surge in adoption.

Circulating Market Cap Soars 245%

According to a Messari report, the entire crypto market cap increased in Q4 2023, largely driven by the anticipation surrounding the introduction of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

NEAR actively participated in the overall market rally and achieved additional gains due to its heightened network activity and significant announcements. As a result, NEAR’s circulating market cap for the end of 2023 reached $3.7 billion, marking a 245% increase quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) and a 246% increase year-on-year (YoY).

crypto

Furthermore, NEAR’s fully diluted market cap reached $4.3 billion. The protocol’s market cap ranking also soared, climbing 10 places to reach approximately 30th by the end of 2023.

In Q4 2023, NEAR’s revenue grew substantially, primarily generated from network transaction fees, reaching $750,000. The increase in revenue was attributed to the heightened activity generated by projects such as KAIKAINOW and NEAR Inscriptions.

During the Inscriptions craze, revenue surged due to a transaction spike, driving up transaction fees. Notably, NEAR employs a fee-burning mechanism, where 70% of all fees are burned, while the remaining 30% is directed to the contract from which the transaction originated.

NEAR User Base Skyrockets

Another key metric demonstrating the protocol’s growth in Q4 2023 is that NEAR experienced significant growth in its user base.

Average daily active addresses increased by 1,250% YoY, reaching 870,000 in Q4 2023. In addition, the number of daily new addresses grew by a remarkable 550% YoY to 170,000 in Q4 2023.

NEAR

According to Messari, this expansion comes after the successful launch and adoption of projects such as KAIKAINOW and contributions from the Sweat Economy, Aurora, and Playember, which further supported this positive trend.

NEAR’s daily active addresses were notably higher than those of other leading blockchain networks. For example, Optimism averaged 72,000 daily active addresses, Arbitrum 150,000, Polygon PoS 375,000, and Aptos 60,000 in Q4 2023.

NEAR Inscriptions significantly drove network activity, reaching a yearly high of 14 million transactions in December. Despite this substantial increase, transaction fees remained stable, staying below $0.01 for the quarter.

Top 25 Blockchain By TVL In Q4 2023

NEAR’s Total Value Locked (TVL) reached $128 million by the end of Q4 2023, marking a remarkable 147% increase from the previous quarter. Among blockchains, NEAR positioned itself at approximately 25th place regarding TVL.

Within the NEAR Network’s TVL, NEAR contributed $59 million, accounting for nearly 46% of the total TVL on the network. The remaining TVL was distributed across various decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, including Aurora, Ref, Berry Club, and Flux.

NEAR

Additionally, NEAR announced partnerships with projects such as Chainlink and decentralized exchange (DEX) SushiSwap.

According to Messari, the integration with Chainlink’s decentralized oracle network provided NEAR developers with access to real-world data and external Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), enhancing the functionality and usability of NEAR-based applications.

On the other hand, the collaboration with SushiSwap allowed NEAR users to access a wide range of token swaps, liquidity pools, and yield farming opportunities, enabling developer adoption and increased usage within the ecosystem.

Ultimately, looking ahead to 2024, Messari said the protocol’s vision is to iterate the technology roadmap, attract more developers, and attract more leading protocols.

Bitcoin Price At Risk? Grayscale’s $335M Coinbase Transfer Stirs $30,000 Plunge Potential

The Bitcoin price has experienced a notable shift as selling pressure mounts, with BTC bears gaining the upper hand. Asset manager Grayscale, the owner and manager of the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), is a significant contributor to this trend.

Since the trading of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) began on January 12, Grayscale has been on a selling spree, as evidenced by substantial transfers of BTC to the United States-based crypto exchange Coinbase.

Bitcoin Price Under Pressure As Grayscale Selling Spree Continues

According to Akrham Intelligence data, in addition to the previously reported 69,994 BTC ($2.9 billion) transfers, Grayscale sent an additional 8,593,075 BTC (approximately $335.19 million) to the exchange on Tuesday, suggesting the possibility of further selling activities.

Bitcoin price

These developments have affected the Bitcoin price, which has experienced a significant downtrend, declining by 20% over the past week and a half.

On Tuesday, the largest cryptocurrency dropped as low as $38,500, placing considerable pressure on a crucial support level. Despite the bearish pressure, the $38,500 support level has demonstrated resilience so far, with the cryptocurrency rebounding to $39,300 at the time of writing.

Nevertheless, the duration of Grayscale’s selling spree remains uncertain, and if market sentiment continues to turn negative, Bitcoin could potentially revisit the $30,000 mark. This figure is just above the key $29,000 level that marked the beginning of the bull run that took Bitcoin to its 22-month high of $49,000 on January 11th.

Bears On The Rise

If the $38,500 threshold succumbs to Grayscale’s selling pressure and profit-taking, market observers should closely monitor the $37,750 level as the next resistance.

Failure to hold above this level would open the door to a potential decline toward the major resistance at $35,600, which could further prevent a dip to the next support level at $33,000.

However, if these support levels are breached and the Bitcoin price continues its downtrend, the next significant key levels to watch for bullish momentum would be $29,000 to $30,000. A breakdown below these levels could signal an end to the current bull market structure and grant the bears the upper hand in the mid-term, at least until the anticipated halving event in April.

Historically, halving events have acted as major catalysts for the Bitcoin price, and their influence has been demonstrated.

As the Bitcoin market faces intensified selling pressure and Grayscale’s ongoing selling spree, market participants remain cautious about the potential for a significant price plunge. The coming days and weeks will be critical in determining whether Bitcoin can regain its bullish momentum or if it will succumb to further downward pressure.

Kyber Network Takes Swift Action After $48 Million Breach, Implements Critical Decisions

Decentralized finance (DeFi) platform Kyber Network has taken significant steps to address the aftermath of a massive security breach in November, with CEO and co-founder Victor Tran at the helm.

Despite the challenges posed by the “Elastic exploit”, KyberSwap’s core business, including the aggregator and limit order functions, remains fully functional, according to the latest statement.

Kyber Network Response To Elastic Exploit

As stated by Tran, Kyber Network is preparing to launch the Zap API, this is expected to enable decentralized applications (dApps), wallets, and other projects to serve as convenient gateways for users to access DeFi liquidity protocols.

Additionally, Kyber Network has made operational changes, including temporary pauses in liquidity protocol initiatives and the KyberAI project, to “ensure a sustainable future”. Tran further stated:

Regrettably, we have also reduced our workforce by 50%. The past few days have been among the most challenging in my journey as an entrepreneur. The decision to part ways with so many of our team members was heart-wrenching. Each individual is not only highly skilled but also deeply committed to advancing DeFi and bringing tangible value to end-users.

Tran also stated that Kyber Network’s response to the Elastic exploit includes the implementation of the KyberSwap Elastic Exploit Treasury Grant Program, aimed at covering up to 100% of users’ losses

To provide clarity on the situation, Kyber Network has categorized the affected assets and outlined the consequences for each category.

Treasury Grants For Victims

According to the network’s blog post, Category 1 comprises affected assets taken from affected pools by the primary exploit, which commenced on November 22, 2023.

This category includes liquidity positions and liquidity provider (LP) fees, with a market value of $48,883,930.66. Notably, the network has stated that these assets have yet to be recovered.

Category 2 consists of affected assets taken from affected pools by subsequent activity, referred to as Category 2 Mimicking Bots (MBA).

These assets, totaling US$172,148.52, were obtained by two mimicking bots that replicated the actions of the primary exploit. Similar to Category 1, these assets have yet to be recovered.

Category 3 includes affected assets that were removed from affected pools by subsequent activity, collectively referred to as Category 3 Mimicking Bots (MBA), along with assets referred to as Category 3 swapped affected assets.

While a portion of the affected assets were partially recovered, a portion of the assets were swapped into Category 3 Swapped affected assets. The market value of the Category 3 Affected Assets is $6,405,483.43, based on the last block before the Category 3 MBA.
