Latest Bitcoin Top Is Different From 2021 Peak, Analyst Explains Why

An analyst has explained why the recent high in Bitcoin has experienced different market conditions than those observed during the 2021 bull run peak.

Bitcoin Liquidations Have Been Short-Dominated In Recent Market High

In a new post on X, on-chain analyst Checkmate pointed out how the latest 2024 high achieved following the spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) inflows has a major difference when compared to the 2021 peak.

The difference lies in the trend registered on derivatives markets. Below is the chart shared by the analyst that shows the trend in the dominance of long liquidations in the sector over the last few years.

Bitcoin Long Liquidations

Liquidation” here naturally refers to the act of forceful closure that any derivatives market contract undergoes on an exchange when it accumulates losses of a certain degree.

The risk of a contract getting liquidated becomes higher, and the more volatile the asset price gets. During sharp rallies and crashes, huge amounts of liquidation can pile up in the market.

From the chart, it’s visible that as the rally in the cryptocurrency had occurred this year, the short holders had been taking a beating. This was only natural as surges pile up losses for these investors betting on a decline, so price growth as rapid as the one witnessed would have pushed many of these contracts toward liquidation.

Interestingly, the scale of the short dominance maintained throughout the run, implying that the investors didn’t quite believe the run would continue any further at every point of the rally, so they bet against it.

This has also remained true in the recent stagnation following the top, as short liquidations have outweighed the long ones even though the price has decreased.

As is apparent in the graph, the 2021 peaks saw a different trend. Longs were getting liquidated as Bitcoin topped out during both the first half of the 2021 peak and the second half.

In those periods, the investors had become too greedy and were only betting on the rise to continue even when the asset had slowed down. This greed appears to haven’t overtaken the market in the bull run.

While the current Bitcoin rally differs from the last one in this metric, analyst Maartunn has pointed out in an X post another indicator where the trend appears to be similar to that observed in previous peaks.

Image

This indicator is the Coin Days Destroyed (CDD), which basically tells us about the scale of dormant coin movement that’s happening in the market right now. It would appear that this metric had attained very high levels recently.

“Coin Days Destroyed has probably peaked,” says Maartunn. “Bitcoin’s price typically reaches its peak around the same time.” It should be noted that although this has been true for some of the tops, the 2021 peak took months to form after the metric peaked.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin is floating around $62,200, up more than 5% over the past week.

Bitcoin Volatility Induces $700 Million Carnage In Crypto Futures

Data shows the cryptocurrency futures market has seen liquidations amounting to $700 million in the past day as Bitcoin has gone through its volatility.

Bitcoin Has Seen Intense Price Action In Past 24 Hours

The past day has been a bit of a rollercoaster for Bitcoin, with the asset registering sharp price action in both directions but ultimately going up as the bulls win out.

The chart below shows what the price action for the cryptocurrency has looked like recently.

Bitcoin Price Chart

From the graph, it’s visible that Bitcoin initially witnessed some sharp bullish momentum, in which the coin not only broke above the $60,000 level, but went up to touch the $64,000 mark.

This high, which is the peak for the year so far, only lasted briefly, however, as BTC crashed down spectacularly to under the $59,000 mark. The asset has since recovered to higher levels, now floating around $62,700.

The rest of the cryptocurrency sector has also gone through its volatility, with prices fluctuating across the coins. As is usually the case with such sharp price action, the futures market has suffered many liquidations.

Crypto Futures Market Has Gone Through A Squeeze In The Past Day

According to data from CoinGlass, the cryptocurrency futures market has witnessed the liquidation of contracts worth more than $700 million in the last 24 hours.

The table below displays the relevant information about the liquidations.

Bitcoin & Crypto Liquidations

It would appear that only $131 million of the liquidations came within twelve hours, suggesting that most of the flush was situated inside the preceding half-day period. This makes sense, as Bitcoin was most volatile inside this window.

It also seems that the long-to-short ratio in this liquidation event has been quite balanced, even though the price has increased in the past day. This would suggest that some aggressive longing occurred as Bitcoin approached $64,000, and the subsequent pullback wiped these top buyers.

The table below shows how the distribution has looked for the various symbols.

Bitcoin & Other Cryptos

As is generally the case, Bitcoin futures contracts have again been responsible for the largest portion of the total market liquidations, contributing around $270 million.

What’s different this time, however, is that this share, although the largest, isn’t even half the total liquidations. This could come down to the fact that speculators may now be playing around with altcoin positions after gaining confidence from the BTC price surge.

Dogecoin, the best performer among the top coins with its 34% jump, has occupied the largest share among the alts, with almost $51 million in liquidations.

Glassnode Co-Founder Warns: Bitcoin’s Surge Could Trigger A $1 Billion Liquidation Event – Here’s Why

A notable perspective recently came from the Glassnode co-founders Jan Happel and Yann Allemann, Negentropic on X, who recently shared insights into Bitcoin price dynamics. Notably, the analysts highlighted liquidity as a crucial factor for Bitcoin’s price trajectory.

Bitcoin Market On The Brink Of Spike In Volatility

Negentropic revealed that BTC’s recent ascent above $42,200 has created a significant liquidity pool for long positions, marked by a “neutral impulse” in the market.

This trend indicates that Bitcoin aims to bridge the liquidity gap above the $42,000 mark, which hints at potential volatility and significant market changes.

So far, about $659 million in liquidations have taken place,  leading Negentropic to predict that continuing the bullish momentum could trigger liquidations worth $1 billion in short positions.

This scenario could catalyze a market uplift through a “short squeeze,” a rapid price increase forcing short sellers to exit their positions. Such market movements often result in dramatic shifts, providing a fertile ground for Bitcoin’s growth.

Meanwhile, in a post uploaded last week, Negentropic linked the burgeoning liquidity in the crypto market to China’s efforts to stabilize its markets by injecting substantial liquidity. According to the Glassnode co-founder, this development could serve as a crucial catalyst for crypto like Bitcoin and equity markets as we progress into the first half of 2024.

This perspective aligns with the broader market recovery, as Bitcoin shows signs of resurgence following reduced selling pressure, particularly from the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC).

Bitcoin trades for $43,166, up 6% in the past week. However, despite this uptick, the asset’s daily trading volume remains subdued, down from $26 billion last Monday to $14 billion today, indicating a cautious market sentiment.

BTC Bullish Signals Strengthen

Amid these market developments, bullish forecasts continue to emerge. Crypto analyst Jelle recently suggested that with Bitcoin reclaiming the $42,000 level, it might be “time to focus on longs once again.”

Echoing this sentiment, Michael van de Poppe, a prominent crypto analyst and pundit, expressed optimism in his latest YouTube video. He argued that the recent price correction in Bitcoin might have reached its conclusion.

Further supporting the bullish sentiment, Ali’s chart analysis reveals an increase in large Bitcoin holders. An additional 46 entities now possess 1,000 BTC or more, a 3% rise in just two weeks.

Crypto Futures Razed To Ground As $659 Million Rekt With Bitcoin Crash

Data shows the cryptocurrency futures sector has gone through a mass liquidation event in the past 24 hours as Bitcoin has witnessed a sharp crash.

Crypto Futures Liquidations Have Added Up To $659 Million In Past Day

The cryptocurrency market has seen sharp price action during the past 24 hours. As is usually the case during such volatility, chaos has occurred on the futures side of the sector.

According to data from CoinGlass, almost $660 million in futures contracts have found liquidation on the last day.

Bitcoin & Crypto Liquidations

Liquidation” here naturally refers to the process that any contract undergoes when it racks up losses equivalent to a specific percentage of the position (which may differ between platforms). The exchange has to close it forcibly.

The above table shows that the longs took the brunt of this liquidation flush, as they saw contracts worth about $568 million decimated. This equals about 86% of the total liquidations in the past day.

The forceful closures have been so lopsided due to the sector observing a sharp drawdown following Bitcoin’s crash that took its price to as low as $41,500.

It’s also visible in the table that about $613 million of the total liquidations came during the last twelve hours alone, which again lines up with price action as that’s when the market was most volatile.

Regarding the individual contributions from each of the different symbols, it’s no surprise that Bitcoin-related contracts occupied the largest share of the liquidations at about $148 million.

Bitcoin Futures

Generally, though, BTC makes up for a huge part of the total market liquidations, but this time, the asset’s percentage share isn’t too extraordinary. Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL) are the next biggest contributors to the squeeze, with about $111 million and $34 million in liquidations, respectively.

Historically, mass liquidation events like the one seen today haven’t exactly been a rare sight in the cryptocurrency sector due to the high volatility that most coins display on the regular and extreme amounts of leverage being easily accessible in many exchanges.

Recently, the interest in the derivatives side of the sector has become especially pronounced, as CryptoQuant Netherlands community manager Maartunn has talked about in a recent post on X.

Bitcoin Spot & Futures Volume

As displayed in the graph, the Bitcoin futures volume has generally been higher than the spot volume during the last few years, but the gap between the two especially widened during the second half of 2023.

The indicator’s value saw some decline in the last couple of months of the year, but the recent values of the metric have still been quite high compared to the norm in the past.

Bitcoin Price

Bitcoin has seen some recovery since its initial crash, as the asset is now trading around the $42,700 mark.

$113 Million In Longs Get Rekt As Bitcoin Plunges Back To $34,000

Data shows the cryptocurrency longs have taken a beating today because of the plunge towards $34,000 that Bitcoin has observed.

Cryptocurrency Futures Market Has Seen Liquidations Totaling $137 Million Today

According to data from CoinGlass, a large amount of liquidations have taken place in the cryptocurrency futures market during the past day. “Liquidation” here refers to a forced closure of a futures contract being done by the derivative contract with which said position is open.

A contract is liquidated when it amasses losses equal to a certain percentage of the margin (that is, the initial collateral that the holder had put forth when opening the contract).

As it’s easy for traders’ bets to fail during volatile periods, it’s not surprising that the volatility from the past day has induced liquidations throughout the market. The below table shows the data for the liquidations that have occurred in the sector during the last day.

Crypto and Bitcoin Liquidations

As you can see, the cryptocurrency futures market has seen liquidations amounting to about $137 million in the past day. Out of these, around $113 million of the contracts were long positions.

This means that more than 82% of the liquidation flush in this period has involved the long holders. This is consistent with the price action, as most of the liquidations have been triggered by a plunge in the Bitcoin price from above $35,400 to the $34,000 mark.

Such large liquidation events are popularly called “squeezes.” Since the squeeze from the last 24 hours has seen the longs on the losing side, the event was a “long squeeze.”

As the below table displays, Bitcoin-related contracts have unsurprisingly contributed the most towards this latest squeeze.

Bitcoin Flush

Bitcoin saw $40 million in futures liquidations, while Ethereum registered almost half of those at $21 million. Out of the altcoins, Solana (SOL) observed the highest liquidations.

SOL has seen a bit of an explosion recently, so it’s not unexpected that it has attracted a large amount of speculators towards it. As a natural consequence of this higher interest in the cryptocurrency, its liquidations have been more than the other altcoins.

Mass liquidation events like today’s aren’t exactly a rare occurrence in the cryptocurrency sector, due to extreme amounts of leverage being easily accessible and the volatility that most of the coins witness on the regular.

It would appear that today’s liquidation squeeze has been unable to put off speculators, as the Bitcoin open interest (a measure of the total amount of contracts open on the futures market) is still at high values.

Bitcoin Open Interest

As such, it’s possible that Bitcoin will see more volatility in the near future and with it, another liquidation squeeze.

Bitcoin Price

Following its drop of more than 3%, Bitcoin is now trading around the $34,200 level.

Bitcoin Liquidations Top $500 Million Amid $1 Billion Crypto Decimation

Bitcoin liquidations have been ramping up over the last day following the market crash that rocked the crypto space on Thursday. The result of this is a liquidation event, the likes of which have not been seen since the FTX collapse back in 2022. And Bitcoin’s numbers have shot up as long traders are completely obliterated in the process.

Largest Single Crypto Liquidation Event In 2023

Following Bitcoin’s price decline to the low $25,000s, the liquidations picked up quickly with over $1 billion dollars of crypto positions being closed rapidly. Bitcoin, in particular, suffered the brunt of these liquidations as its numbers quickly climbed to 9 digits.

By the time Friday morning rolled around, the digital asset’s liquidation was at approximately $500 million with long traders suffering the majority of losses. According to data from Coinglass, Bitcoin’s long liquidation figures were already over $373 million, with shorts coming in at $125 million.

Bitcoin liquidations

While Bitcoin was in the lead as expected, Ethereum was not that far behind. The second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap saw an even larger proportion of long liquidations compared to shorts. Out of the $308 million in liquidations, long traders lost $254.59 million while short traders came in at $54.3 million.

Ethereum also saw the largest single liquidation order. The order which was worth $55.92 million at the time took place on the Binance crypto exchange across the ETH/BUSD pair. However, the OKX exchange saw the largest Ethereum liquidations at $108.87 million, 92.8% of which were longs.

The Tide Is Starting To Turn For Bitcoin

Following the initial plummet, Bitcoin began to show strength which saw its price add over $1,000. This recovery to $26,000 signaled a possible turn for the digital assets and the shorters began to feel the heat at this point.

In the last four hours, long traders have gotten some reprieve as $8.53 million of the $10.96 million in liquidations so far were short trades. However, long traders are still not left out with $2.46 million in liquidations as well.

Since the Bitcoin price remains extremely volatile at this point, liquidation volumes are expected to rise. However, there is no indication so far of where the price of the digital asset might be headed next as bulls and bears continue a tug-of-war for control.

Bitcoin is currently trading at a price of 26,451, representing a price decline of 7.48% over the last day, according to data from Coinmarketcap. The asset has also seen a 110% increase in daily trading volume which is now sitting at $34.47 billion.

Bitcoin’s Break Above $20,000 Sees Market Liquidations Cross $1 Billion

Tuesday has proven to be a good day for bitcoin and the crypto market in its entirety as gains have been the order of the day. Bitcoin has finally been able to clear the $20,000 territory even when indicators pointed towards the more sluggish movement for the digital asset. As expected, there have been ripple events from the gains in the market. Liquidations are now the order of the day and short traders are getting the ‘short’ end of the stick.

Crypto Liquidations Cross $1 Billion

The crypto market has now recorded its worse liquidation trend so far in 2022. Bitcoin’s recovery above $20,000 was swift and the liquidations were just as fast. The result of this is more than $1 billion being liquidated across the crypto market in the last 24 hours.

Given the recovery, short traders have suffered the worst of it. Data from Coinglass shows that over 87% of all liquidations recorded in the past day have been from short traders. This means that short traders have lost more than $700 million in a single day.

Amid this, FTX exchange recorded the largest liquidation event in history with more than $700 million liquidated on the crypto exchange. This puts the majority of the market liquidations on FTX (74.7%) with all other exchanges making up about 25% of the remaining figure.

Bitcoin and crypto liquidations

Approximately 156,000 traders were caught in the crossfire of this bloody trading day. The largest single liquidation was recorded on the Okex – ETH-USDT-SWAP pair for a total of $3.05 million. Total market liquidation values now sit at $1.12 billion at the time of this writing.

Bitcoin Gearing Up For More

Bitcoin has landed in the mid-$20,000s after the current rally but the digital asset does not seem to be done yet. The recovery put it firmly above its 50-day moving average, which cements its short-term bull trend.

Additionally, the correlation with the stock market remains high and bitcoin is bound to follow the performance of its largest counterpart. If the current positive sentiment across the financial market continues, then it is possible that BTC would test the $21,000 resistance before the close of the trading day on Wednesday.

High inflation rates across the world are also triggering investors’ move to bitcoin. Forecasts have put countries around the world at even higher inflation rates going into the end of the year, which could paint a bull picture for cryptocurrencies going forward.

BTC is currently trading at $20,600 at the time of this writing. It is up 6.98% in the last 24 hours and has a current market cap of 396 billion. It has also seen $61.7 billion in trading volume, a 136% increase in the last day.

More Than 57,000 Traders Liquidated As Bitcoin Declines Below $22,000

The price of bitcoin has once again fallen below $22,000 once more. As expected, it has come with its own consequences for those in the crypto market. Most prominent have been in the liquidations, which have ballooned in the last 24 hours. With the most recent crash, more than 57,000 traders have seen their positions liquidated.

Bitcoin Dip Triggers $151 Million Liquidations

Over the last 24 hours, more than 57,000 traders have been liquidated in the crypto market. This has led to a total of $151 million in assets liquidated over the last day. The most prominent of these has been the Ethereum liquidations.

Ethereum, which had taken the lead during the market recovery and rallied higher than $1,600, had led the short liquidations and now, continues to lead in terms of long liquidations. Ethereum liquidations alone have crossed $70 million in the last 24 hours and $20 million in the last 12 hours.

Others include bitcoin, which has only seen half the volume of liquidations compared to Ethereum. In total, there have been more than $30 million in bitcoin liquidations in the past day, accounting for 1.38K BTC. This makes it the second-largest liquidation for a digital asset in the last day. The majority of liquidations have been from long traders at 63.96%.

FOMC Looms Over Market

The recovery that had been rocking bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies has been stopped dead in its tracks as the week opened. There are various factors behind this decline such as large corporations announcing earnings and showing that they had dumped a lot of bitcoin.

Additionally, the FOMC is starting on Tuesday, and the announcement is expected to be made on Wednesday. So basically, while this is turning out to be a big week for the financial market, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the market would see any good price action.

Bitcoin had also not been able to beat its 200-week moving average, and the resistance faced at this point has brought the price to a lower support point. This has marked a bearish trend for bitcoin, meaning that the digital asset will likely test $20,000 in the coming days.

Short Liquidations Climb As Bitcoin Recovers Above $20,000

Bitcoin had lost its footing above $20,000 at the start of the week, sparking uncertainty among investors who had previously believed that the price of bitcoin was in a recovery trend. This decline saw more sell-offs in the space, albeit to a lesser extent than previously recorded. With the digital asset now starting on another recovery trend though, traders who had bet against its ability to move upward are finding themselves in very unpleasant situations.

Bitcoin Short Traders Suffer Losses

Bitcoin had begun to recover just after the CPI had shown that the United States inflation rate had hit a new 40-year high. At 9.1%, it was the highest number ever recorded since 1981 and this had prompted investors to look to other alternatives for protecting their wealth from being eaten into by inflation. The result had been an influx of new money into the bitcoin market.

The recovery had seen a lot of traders who had bet against bitcoin suffering losses. Data from Coinglass shows that in the last 24 hours, almost $200 million in liquidations have been recorded and the majority of the liquidations had been from short traders. In total, there have been more than 57,800 traders liquidated and at a percentage of 83.91%, more than 48,000 traders who were betting against the crypto market’s recovery have suffered losses.

Even as time has gone on, the liquidations have not subsided. In the last 12 hours alone, the liquidation numbers have come out to more than 54 million. At the time of writing this, the last four hours had seen liquidations of $21 million and this is expected to ramp up as the recovery continues.

Ethereum Takes The Lead

In most cases, when the market liquidations are calculated, bitcoin always takes the lead. However, that is not the case this time as another has taken the lead in liquidations. Ethereum’s recovery over the last day had been just as dramatic as that of bitcoin and short traders were caught in the wave.

The second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap accounts for the majority of the liquidations recorded in the last day. It has seen more than 72.64K ETH liquidated, amounting to more than $90 million. Bitcoin which usually leads the pack has only seen half the value of liquidations in the same time period.

The same is the case on a 12-hour basis, although bitcoin is catching up in this regard. Ethereum continues to lead but by a much smaller margin.

Other cryptocurrencies that have recorded high liquidations in the last day include MATIC, SOL, and AAVE with $8.52 million, $5.93 million, and $2.81 million respectively.

Crypto Traders Lose $280 Million Following Bitcoin’s Break Above $22,000

As the week draws to a close, there have been some interesting turns in the price of bitcoin. The digital asset which had been struggling to hold the $20,000 had finally broken out of this funk and was able to make a rally to the mid $22,000s. This rally had naturally led to liquidations in the market and as time goes on, these liquidations ramped up with the volatility that has followed this price recovery.

More Than 65,000 Traders Rekt

As of Friday morning, data from Coinglass shows that more than 65,000 traders have been liquidated over the last 24 hours. The liquidations had surged following the quick recovery of bitcoin above $20,000 and by the end of the day, it had added over $2,000 to its value. Traders were quickly caught off guard and millions of dollars in short positions were liquidated.

In total, there have been more than $280 million in liquidations over the last day and they continue to grow. The majority has come out to be shorts with $214.74 million in the last day. However, long traders have not been spared the onslaught with $67.35 million in the same time period. The reason for the long liquidations is that the digital asset had peaked in the mid-$22,000s and has lost about $1,000 since then.

BTC declines to low $21,000 | Source: BTCUSD on TradingView.com

Bitcoin traders are naturally bearing the brunt of the liquidations. Data shows that the past day has seen 6,320 BTC lost. This translates to $135.69 million, with the largest single liquidation event being on the BTC-USD pair at a total of $3.86 million on the Huobi crypto exchange.

Altcoins Follow Bitcoin Lead

Altcoins have maintained a close following with bitcoin when it comes to the liquidation trends. Altcoins such as Ethereum have seen tens of millions of dollars liquidated in the past day. ETH’s numbers have come out to a total of 69,110 ETH, coming out to a dollar value of $84.15 million.

Others that have seen large liquidations include Solana (SOL) which has been making a splash in the NFT space lately. The Ethereum competitor had seen a total of $4.14 million liquidated coming out to a combined 111,970 SOL.

Others such as GMT, AVAX, and CRV have all recorded above $3 million. While MATIC, XRP, and SAND have seen liquidations of $2.85 million, $2.45 million, and $2.17 million respectively.

About half of the liquidations have been recorded in the last 24 hours alone with $137.96 in total liquidations. Shorts continue to make up a larger portion of the liquidations but with the price of bitcoin in a current downturn, long liquidations are ramping up.

“Buy The Dip” Sentiment Fails To Save Crypto Market, New Data Reveals Why

Since crypto prices have fallen to their lowest point, now is the ideal time to “Buy-the-Dip.” But during these brief price declines, traders appear to be shorting cryptocurrency more than they are buying it.

“Buy-the-Dip” Sentiments Does Not Stop Crypto Shorting

More short sales or shorting occur in altcoins than in bitcoin. In the past day, short holdings in Bitcoin (BTC) have averaged roughly 51% across exchanges, while short positions in altcoins have averaged about 55%.

BTC/USD hovers around $20k. Source: TradingView

Santiment, an on-chain analytics tool, states that data on the average funding rate for Bitcoin and altcoins relative to the price of bitcoin shows that traders continue to short altcoins at every minor decline. The long/short ratio for Bitcoin, in contrast, is unchanged despite price swings.

“As prices gradually fell on Sunday, traders have shown that though they may proclaim to be buyingthedip, they are shorting more on these mini drops. Interestingly, this only applies to altcoins right now, indicating that Bitcoin is being flocked to as the safe haven.”

According to Coinglass data, traders kept shorting crypto on Monday. In the last 24 hours, a $25 million liquidation of Ethereum (ETH) witnessed 56 percent shorts. Polkadot (DOT), Solana (SOL), XRP, Cardano (ADA), and BNB, meanwhile, saw 55 percent, 59 percent, 63 percent, 67 percent, and 53 percent shorts.

It’s interesting to note that in the past 24 hours, short positions in Tether (USDT) have increased by 85% across exchanges. Some short sellers think that Chinese real estate brokers back the majority of Tether’s assets in commercial paper. Since the previous month, USDT has experienced significant redemptions, causing its market cap to drop close to $66 billion.

Amidst a dim market outlook, hedge funds are also progressively shorting the U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin Tether (USDT).

Liquidation OF Altcoins Rises Amid Short Selling

Liquidations are also increasing as traders continue to short altcoins. Altcoins that were actively traded in the morning are currently in the negative. Due to a recent increase in liquidation, the price of Ethereum (ETH) has decreased by around 4% during the past 24 hours. Other altcoins have also given up gains and are currently declining.

Over $250 Million In Liquidations As Bitcoin Recovers Above $20,000

Liquidations have rocked the space as the price of Bitcoin has fluctuated between red and green in the last week. Since the price had been crashing for the major parts of last week, the liquidations have been heavily skewed towards long traders. This trend has now changed as short traders’ liquidations have ramped up in the past week owing to recovery above $20,000.

Short Liquidations Ramp Up

Coming out of the weekend, the price of bitcoin has been doing much better than it was during the weekdays. This has now turned the tide of liquidations towards the short traders. These sorts of positions had ramped up as the price of the digital asset had declined, causing some to believe that it was going to continue. However, the price of the cryptocurrency seems to have found its footing above $17,000 and had made a bounce-off from there.

As of the early hours of Monday, the price of bitcoin is resting in the mid-$20,000s. At the same time, liquidation volumes remain large in the market. The past 24 hours have seen more than $250 million liquidated in the market. At the same time, about 80,000 traders have lost their positions, the majority of whom have been short traders at 63.56%.

Liquidations pass $260 million | Source: Coinglass

About $100 million worth of bitcoin has been liquidated in the same time period, coming out to 4,800 BTC. While Ethereum liquidations have also ramped up with $82.47 million in liquidations in the same time period.

Altcoins such as SOL, DOGE, and GMT are also feeling the heat, returning large volumes to liquidations. OKEX crypto exchange has seen the most liquidations with $96.25 million in the last 24 hours, with Binance in second place with $76.08 million.

Bitcoin Price Stays In The Green

Bitcoin had closed the last week in the red after finally ending its nine-week red streak the prior week. This close had come with a lot of negative implications, pushing the price of the digital asset to yearly lows. However, this storm has begun to pass with the recovery in price.

The weekend had seen a ramp-up in buying since the price of the cryptocurrency had dropped to the $17,000 level. This provided a much-needed bounce point as support had begun to form. What would follow was a $3,000 gain over the next two days that brought the value of the digital asset close to $21,000 once more.

But even as the bulls have struggled to take a hold of the market, their efforts have been met with much opposition. Significantly at the $21,000 where there is now the most resistance. A break above this point will likely see the digital asset touch $25,000 before the end of the week. Hence the opposition.

On the other side is the first support level for the digital asset which has now formed at $20,150. However, with the selling sentiment still so strong among investors, it is doubtful that bitcoin will be able to hold for very long at such prices.

More Than 253,000 Traders Liquidated As Crypto Bloodbath Continues

The crypto bloodbath has left thousands of traders in a bad way. A rapid decrease in price has seen more than 240,000 traders rekt in the span of 24 hours. As the downtrend continues, more investors are added to the long line of losers, most of which have been long traders. As it stands, there are now almost a billion dollars that have been liquidated in the market so far and this number continues to climb with bitcoin declining below $24,000.

Over $940 Million In Crypto Liquidated

Over the last 24 hours, the liquidations that have rocked the crypto market have been nothing short of brutal. Most of the liquidations have come from the largest digital assets in the space but Bitcoin has borne the brunt of it once more.

The long traders who were hoping for further price recovery had been hit hard in the space. Although the majority of liquidations have been long liquidations, it doesn’t mean that short traders have been spared either. What has occurred has been that as the price fluctuations continue, a lot of traders have been blindsided and had their positions liquidated in a flash.

So far, there have been a little over 253,000 traders liquidated in the past day alone but these numbers are rapidly growing. Data from Coinglass shows that $596.99 million in longs have been liquidated, accounting for 63.25% of all rekt volume. While $346.86 million in shorts have been liquidated, making up the remaining 36.75% of losses.

Bitcoin, Ethereum, Record Massive Losses

As expected, the big players have seen the most losses in the past 24 hours. What is more interesting is the volume of digital assets that have been lost by traders. For bitcoin alone, there have been more than 16.84K BTC liquidated. This comes out to $399.38 million. As for Ethereum, it tells an almost identical story with 298.96K ETH liquidated which totals $356.82 million.

The smaller altcoins have not been spared from the onslaught either. Solana which has been one of the worst losers when it comes to the market downtrend has seen this translate into liquidations. With the digital asset finally dropping below $30, long liquidations have ramped up, leaving traders losing 699.32K SOL or $18.59 million in the past 24 hours.

Other top losers include FLM with $11.99, GMT with $7.86 million, ADA with $7.53 million, and TRX with $5.85 million. $127 Million In Bitcoin And Ethereum Positions Liquidated Amid Market Drop

Data shows that over the past 24 hours, more than $127 million in Bitcoin and Ethereum futures have been liquidated. The price of both cryptos has decreased by 6% and 7%, respectively, wiping out the recent gain.

According to Coinglass statistics, Bitcoin futures alone lost $57.78 million, implying that most trading activity and open interest were restricted by market capitalization to the most prominent cryptocurrency. However, Ethereum futures suffered a $64 million loss.

Liquidations occur when an exchange closes a leveraged position for a safety mechanism. It happens because of a partial or total loss of the trader’s initial margin. That happens primarily in futures trading. That only tracks asset prices instead of spot trading, where traders own the actual assets.

As per CoinMarketCap statistics, Bitcoin is currently down 5.85% on the day. It also means that the major cryptocurrency with a market value of $563.33 billion is down 57.06% from its all-time high of $68,789.63.

Likewise, Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency, is now down 64.02% from its all-time high of $4,891.70 reached in November 2021. Nevertheless, ETH is struggling to keep its recent positive momentum going.

Feasible Reasons Behind Bitcoin & Ethereum Crash

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index is a way of gauging market activity and determining if the price of cryptocurrencies are priced fairly. According to the Fear & Greed Index, the score is down (15 out of 100), implying that the market is experiencing “extreme fear.”

First, there has been a decrease in Ethereum and Bitcoin trading activity. According to data from DefiLlama, the Total Value Locked (TVL) across multiple protocols in Ethereum has dropped from $88.67 billion to $68.02 billion in the last 24 hours.

The flow of Bitcoin to crypto exchanges is down 37.4%, indicating lower demand for BTC among investors, as per the data from Chainalysis indicates.

DeFi Protocols On Ethereum

TVL, or Total Value Locked, on Aave, the largest decentralized finance protocol on Ethereum, lost 15% of its value over the past month. Other blue-chip projects like Curve Finance, MakerDAO, Lido, and Uniswap also lost double-digits of TVL over the same period.

Ethereum is still the most popular blockchain for decentralized applications (defi), with 55.59% of the total defi TVL. This is due to the $101.32 billion worth of value locked in on the ETH chain. Terra is second in terms of market share, with 12.86% and $23.44 billion locked in on its blockchain. Binance Smart Chain (BSC) has 6.37% of the total defi TVL, or $11.6 billion today.

Long Liquidations Continue To Rock Market As Bitcoin Struggles To Settle Above $30,000

The effects of the long liquidations that rocked bitcoin after the digital asset had fallen to $25,000 continue to be felt even now. Bitcoin which has since managed to recover above $30,000 once more remains a prime liquidation target in the market. Even now, a week after the crash that had seen it record its largest liquidation event in six, long traders are still being rekt in the markets.

Bitcoin Liquidations Touch $61 Million

Bitcoin long liquidations may have slowed down but they are far from over. In the last 24 hours, the market has seen more than 61 traders liquidated which has come out to more than $257 million liquidations in the last 24 hours. Naturally, bitcoin liquidations make up a large portion of this and long traders have been the worse hit in the market.

Bitcoin liquidations touched above $61 million on Friday after a particularly brutal day of trading on Thursday. The majority of these had taken place in the mid-afternoon to early evening of Thursday that saw traders liquidate more than $30 million. This had been a result of bitcoin falling below the $30,000 level, a level which it will ultimately retake in the early hours of Friday.

Indicators had turned bullish for the digital asset after this recovery. Even though long traders had seen the most losses for the 24-hour period, it was beginning to turn in their favor as short traders started taking more of the heat with time.

Crypto Market Still Red

Liquidations across other cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum had also been significant in this same 24-hour period, although not to the same extent as bitcoin. In total, there have been $29 million in Ethereum liquidations over the last 24 hours and $7.16 million on the 12-hour chart.

The broader crypto market liquidations touched as high as $258 million as of the time of this writing. Data from Coinglass shows that 73.55% of this figure has been made up of long liquidations. 40.28% of these liquidations have come from crypto exchange Binance, where long liquidations were of a similar percentage. On Okex, 81.54% has been from long liquidations and has made up the majority across various exchanges as well.

Other digital assets that have seen large liquidations including GMT, SOL, and APE, are all being driven by the recent downtrend. Bitcoin has recovered above $30,000, ETH is back above $2,000, and this is facilitating a change. The most recent liquidations on the 4-hour chart have been made up of shorts as sentiment begins to turn positive among investors.

Crypto Shorts See $240M Flush As Bitcoin Rebounds Back Above $30k

Data shows the crypto futures market has taken a $380 million beating over the past day as Bitcoin has rebounded above $30k. Out of this amount, $240 million liquidations have belonged to short traders.

Crypto Shorts Observe $240 Million In Liquidations Over Last 24 Hours

In case anyone isn’t aware of what “liquidations” are, it’s best to first take a brief look at the workings of margin trading in the crypto futures market.

When an investor opens a, say, Bitcoin long or short contract at a derivatives exchange, they first have to put forth some collateral called the “margin.” This margin can be in BTC, any other coin, or even fiat.

Against this margin, the investor may choose to take on “leverage,” a loaned amount often many times the initial position.

The advantage of leverage is that if the price moves in the direction the contract bet on, the profits earned are then many times more now.

However, it is also true that any losses incurred will also be multitudes more. When such losses eat up a specific portion of the margin, the exchange forcefully closes off the Bitcoin position.

This is what a liquidation is. The below table shows the data for liquidations in the crypto market over the past day.

As you can see above, the crypto market has suffered some heavy liquidations over the past day, with $184 million coming in the past 12 hours alone.

A majority of the liquidations have been from short traders, which makes sense as coins like Bitcoin have observed a big rebound in the price today.

Looking at the above data, it seems like more than $240 million liquidations have been short traders getting flushed.

Related Reading | Bitcoin Crash 20% in 5 Days. Why is it the Golden Time to Enter the Crypto Market?

Large liquidations like today’s aren’t particularly uncommon in the crypto market. There are a couple of reasons behind this.

The first is the high volatility of coins. Even the biggest coins like Bitcoin and Ethereum can observe rather large swings in a short timespan.

The other factor that contributes to this is the fact that many derivatives exchanges offer as high as even 100x leverage.

Uninformed traders opting for such large positions in a volatile market like crypto greatly increases the risk of liquidations.

Liquidations Surpass $300 Million As Bitcoin Touches 40-Day Lows

Crypto liquidations have been ramping up coming out of the weekend. The market had recorded a number of dips that saw more than $80 billion shaved off the crypto market. This had meant that bitcoin had declined to the $38,000 territory and had taken the rest of the market with it. However, contrary to expectations that the digital asset would record the most liquidations, that title had been claimed by the second-largest cryptocurrency, Ethereum.

Bitcoin, Ethereum Lead Liquidations

Bitcoin liquidations were no doubt one of the highest in the space. Being the biggest digital asset in the crypto market, bitcoin traders usually bear the brunt of it whenever there’s a large liquidation effect. But this time around, it had placed second behind Ethereum liquidations as the price of the cryptocurrency had fallen to the low $2,800s.

In the last 24 hours, bitcoin had seen a total of $72 million in liquidations. The interesting fact about this though is the fact that the majority of these liquidations had taken place in the last 12 hours alone as at the time of this writing. More than $48 million had been liquidated at press time. Long traders had also made up the majority of this given that the price of the digital asset was in a decline. However, there were some short liquidations sprinkled here and there for the bitcoin.

Ethereum liquidations followed the same pattern of the majority of liquidations happening in the past 12 hours. The second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap had seen approximately $80 million in liquidations in the last 24 hours with $65 million of those liquidations happening in the past 12 hours alone.

These have come out to be mostly short liquidations as the beloved BAYC token recovered above $17 once more.

But even after the expected slow down after surging past $46,000. Instead, the digital asset had continued on its recovery trend. After successfully breaking above $47,000, the short liquidations had ramped up once more.

Ethereum Traders Get Rekt

In the past day, Ethereum traders have gotten the short end of the stick compared to bitcoin traders. These short traders saw the worst of it as more than $25 million was lost in less than an hour. It quickly put ETH ahead of the curve when it comes to liquidations given that most of the liquidations have come from ETH traders.

For the largest single liquidation in the past day, ETH also took the cake. This time around, there was a single trade worth $10.10 million that was liquidated. This took place on the FTX exchange across the ETH-PERP trading pair. It ran up the numbers for Ethereum, with $25.07 million and $50.41 million liquidated in the past one and four hours respectively at the time of writing this article.

Short Traders Get the Short End Of The Stick As Bitcoin Breaks $47,000

Bitcoin price has shattered $47,000 and has left in its wake the bloodbath that is short liquidations. These short traders that obviously expected the previous market trend of low momentum to continue have now incurred hundreds of millions of dollars in losses in the crypto market, and in a very short time too. The bloodbath has not eased up either since bitcoin is still firm in its recovery trend.

Bitcoin Traders Get Rekt

Bitcoin had been on a slow but steady recovery trend over the past week. However, the weekend would quickly put a stop to this slow trend as the digital asset had surged drastically on Sunday night. This trend continued into Monday, seeing the cryptocurrency break the $47,000 price level, setting a three-month high record for bitcoin.

As usual, bitcoin led the pack in terms of liquidation losses. The digital asset saw tens of millions of shorts liquidated in just a matter of minutes following the price surge. In total, there have been more than $60 million in shorts liquidated in the past 12 hours as of the time of writing. On the 24-hour scale, the numbers are even grimmer given that more than $169 million in liquidations have been recorded.

Liquidations Rock Crypto Market

On a broader scale, a lot of crypto traders have been burned in just the last 24 hours ago. Most notable was when the price of bitcoin had successfully broken past $45,000. This point is where bears mounted significant resistance and it was expected it will fall once again from this point like it has the past three months. But traders would bear the brunt of this given that over $100 million in BTC and ETH shorts were liquidated in a mere five minutes after this.
